Examples of Defective Medical Devices

Reiner, Simpson & Slaughter, located in Redding, California, believes the following defective medical devices may have caused unnecessary injuries or wrongful death to patients. The manufacturers of these defective medical devices may be liable for patient injury and death related to the use of their products. Malpractice lawsuits may also be appropriate against physicians who did not provide patients with all available information on the defective medical devices or who did not advise patients of the best course of action regarding previously implanted defective products.

Guidant Implanted Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs) – Guidant (now part of Boston Scientific) has recalled the ICDs due to the possibility that the defective medical devices may contain a short-circuiting flaw or a defective switch causing the ICDs to malfunction.

Guidant Pacemakers - Guidant also recalled pacemakers with a defective seal that posed a potential leak hazard and could cause the defective medical devices to incorrectly accelerate a patient’s heartbeat.

Boston Scientific Express Stent – The FDA issued a Class I recall, the most serious type, for these heart stents because placement of the defective medical devices resulted in extreme complications.

Boston Scientific Hemashield® VANTAGEVascular Grafts – A separate Class I recall for Boston Scientific included these vascular grafts that had the potential to tear during their implantation, leading to severe postoperative complications.

CHARITE® Artificial Disc – In less than two years, there have been over 130 instances of serious complications associated with the use of these defective medical devices.

Regeneration Technologies, Inc. (RTI) Body Tissue Parts – The FDA issued a voluntary recall of implanted body parts and tissue received from Biomedical Tissue Services (BTS). The BTS tissue and body parts were not property screened for disease or defects, subjecting patients to undue health risks.

Baxter Infusion Pumps – The Baxter 6060 Multi-Therapy Infusion pump was recalled because battery malfunctions caused the defective medical devices to improperly dispense (or stop dispensing) pain and other critical medications to patients.
